The Mighty Push
It has been 20 years since my life was devastated when I suffered a spinal cord injury while playing rugby for a season in New Zealand. Although such serious sports injuries are thankfully rare they are tragically still too common in sports such as rugby, horse riding, swimming (diving), skiing, cycling as well as other activities such as simply driving a car. When I suffered my injury the thought of a cure was a distant hope and progress has been slow. Currently, however, a number of treatments are on the verge of moving from the laboratory to clinical trials and as such are close to achieving one of the holy grails of medical science – repair of the spinal cord. Unfortunately research into spinal cord injuries is not a government priority and is not attractive to the large pharmaceutical companies. That leaves it up to charity and the support of people who have been touched in some way by such injuries – hence The Mighty Push!
In order to raise money to help this development I am going to return to New Zealand and complete a 250 mile handcycle journey in three sections; from Burwood Spinal Injuries Unit in Christchurch, where I was initially treated, across the Canterbury Plains, along the Lake Tekapo canal system and finally along the Otago rail trail towards Dunedin.

“The Mighty Push” Logo Design
The name of the pattern is called ' Te tuara o te Wao nui o Tane' the spine of Tane Mahuta. (god of the forest). When all the Maori gods could not separate Heaven and Earth (Rangi and Papa) by standing up right and pushing with their arms and legs, it was Tane who then lay on his back and used his spine to push and separate the two bringing light into the world. This being a great example of keeping steadfast and never giving up the fight when all is dark, to find your light in life. MAURIORA (the breath of life). Que Bidois
